Pharmaceutical industries

Pharmaceutical industry in Tunisia has evolved at a high speed for some years thanks to sector opening to private initiative, to various incentives provided to foreign investment, to production capacity development and to a guaranteed quality of product.
The following indicators are characteristic of the sector:

- It comprises 31 productions units including 3 units for veterinary products.

- Accumulated investments have amounted until year 2007 to about 400 millions Tunisian Dinars.

- Sector production is able to meet almost 47% of national consumption needs.

- Production is made up of products manufactured for 60% under licence and of generic products for 40%.Several international laboratories are established in Tunisia such as SANOFI-AVENTIS, PFIZER, UPSA.

- Around 110 foreign laboratories are currently operating on the Tunisian market and are broken down by nationality in the following order: 45% French, 8% Italian, 8% Swiss, 7% Danish, 6% British, 5% German and 21% others.

- Total Tunisian exports have reached 30 millions Tunisian Dinars in 2008.

Tunisia has always worked to develop new products such as generic drugs, biological and herbal medicines and has created for that purpose a Biotech Pole in order to strengthen synergy among research, innovation, training and production in the fields of Biotechnology applied to health and to pharmaceutical industry.
