Hospital Hygiene and Medical Care Waste Management

In order to fulfil its commitments stemming from Stockholm Agreement concerning elimination of persistent organic polluting matters and to strengthen its national capabilities with regard to treatment and destruction of medical care activities waste (so-called DAS), Tunisia has set up for that purpose a project of a wide scope designed to cope in a durable way with waste management.

The project has the following main objectives:

1/ Identifying the most appropriate technique concerning DAS management.
2/ Preparing a DAS management strategy consistent with the Tunisian environment through:

- Strengthening of legal and institutional environment.
-Training, emphasizing and assisting for capabilities enhancement.
- Investing in equipments acquisitions and premises lay-out

This project is made up of several steps and its implementation will start by 2009 year-end.
At first, Tunisia has stiffened since July 2008 its laws concerning waste control and destruction, through a regulation specifically aimed at the ways and conditions of medical care activities waste management.
The National Agency for Waste Management (so-called ANGED) is in charge of watching over project implementation and progress.

It is worth to note that the quantity of medical care activities waste produced in Tunisia is estimated to be 16.000 tons a year of which 40% are considered as hazardous waste whereas 57% are considered as household waste.
